Case study: AI album cover from brief to print-aware finish

Worked case study—square album art with style exploration, type-safe finish, print considerations, and iteration notes for musicians and designers.

Case study: AI album cover from brief to print-aware finish

Educational composite case study for a square album cover (also usable as playlist art). Combines image workflows, design & brand, music context, and iteration patterns.

Fictional release: North Window — instrumental ambient EP by a solo producer.

The job

Success test: readable silhouette at stamp size; type hierarchy clear; no melted objects stealing focus.

Brief

LineContent
JobAlbum cover still
AudienceAmbient / focus listeners
DeliverableSquare master + social crop
Must includeWindow rain suggestion, warm interior lamp pool, negative space for type
Must excludeFaces, logos, readable posters, horror tones, busy collage

Audio reference (feel only): soft piano + tape hiss—not “copy this famous cover.”

Exploration (timeboxed 40 minutes)

Three style families, four images each:

  1. Photoreal interior
  2. Soft illustration
  3. Abstract light-only

Critique: illustration family won mood but failed tiny thumb (too delicate). Photoreal with simplified shapes won thumb test. Abstract too generic for EP identity.

Direction lock: photoreal simplified interior, one lamp, rain window, large calm wall for type.

Production iterations

v1

Full room with furniture—too busy at 64px.

v2

Crop tighter: window + lamp edge + wall. Better thumb.

v3 (one-variable: light)

Warmer lamp, cooler rain—contrast for type legibility improved.

v4

Inpaint out a weird reflection that looked like a face (kill immediately).

Winner: v3 + cleanup.

Finish (design tool)

  1. Place title North Window in licensed sans, generous tracking
  2. Artist name smaller, lower third
  3. Check contrast on lamp-lit wall
  4. Safe margins for platform UI
  5. Soft film grain to unify
  6. Export PNG/JPEG masters; keep layered file

No AI lettering. Cover text is a design problem (design & brand).

Even if digital-only today, design the square as if print might happen—forces clarity.

Continuity with audio

Producer generated AI track demos earlier (music workflows) but final masters were DAW-finished. Cover art used the same adjective set as the music brief (warm, late, quiet hope) so package cohered.

Misalignment failure mode: aggressive glitch cover on a soft piano EP.

Platform reality checks

Album art is cropped and compressed by every distributor differently:

SurfaceRisk
Spotify / Apple playlist row64px legibility death
Full playerNeeds calm negative space, not edge chaos
InstagramExtra UI chrome; test safe margins
YouTube canonicalOften 16:9—derive a landscape banner from the same still family rather than stretching the square

We exported a 16:9 banner crop from the same v3 still (window heavier, lamp lower) so the EP package felt intentional across surfaces—another win for finishing outside pure generation.

Rights and merch

If the cover becomes vinyl, posters, or paid downloads:

  1. Confirm generator commercial terms for merchandise, not only social posts.
  2. Ensure fonts are licensed for distribution packaging.
  3. Avoid likenesses and logos.
  4. Run the commercial-use checklist.
  5. Keep layered sources for revisions when a distributor rejects compression artifacts.

Rights & licensing covers the deeper map; the checklist is the gate.

Iteration journal (excerpt)

Batch 1: three families — illustration loses thumb
Batch 2: photoreal full room — busy
Batch 3: tighter crop — keep
Batch 4: warmer lamp — keep for type
Batch 5: face-like reflection — kill, inpaint
Finish: real type, grain, multi-export

That journal is more valuable than the “final prompt” alone. See prompt iteration patterns.

Checklist for cover jobs

An album cover is not one square. Plan:

SurfaceConstraint
Streaming 1:1Safe center for faces/type
VinylSpine and large print detail
Social9:16 story safe area

We generated a master 1:1, then recomposed for story and banner rather than stretching. Type was set in design software, not left as model-rendered glyphs.
